AquaStop is a multilayer material that combines a textile base with a thin waterproof membrane.

The upper layer determines the feel, appearance, and comfort of the material. Depending on its intended use, it may be made of:

  • cotton;

  • terry fabric;

  • knitted fabric;

  • microfibre;

  • polyester;

  • quilted fabric with filling.

A thin polyurethane membrane — PU or TPU — is bonded to the reverse side of the textile base. It creates a barrier that prevents liquid from reaching the mattress, furniture, or any other protected surface.

AquaStop is therefore not the name of a single type of fabric. It is a technology that can be combined with different textile bases and adapted to various applications.

How the Membrane Stops Water

Water forms relatively large droplets. Without a protective layer, these droplets pass between the fibres of ordinary fabric, soak into the material, and reach the surface underneath.

The membrane creates a continuous, thin barrier on the reverse side of the textile. Moisture may remain on the surface of the upper layer or be partially absorbed by it, but it cannot pass through the membrane.

Is a Waterproof Membrane Breathable?

How to Check Whether AquaStop Works

You can perform a simple test at home:

  1. Place a dry paper towel underneath the product.

  2. Pour a small amount of water onto its surface.

  3. Wait a few minutes.

  4. Blot the water from the upper layer.

  5. Check the paper towel underneath.

If the membrane is undamaged, the paper towel will remain dry. Do not use hot water or sharp objects during the test, and do not stretch the material while it is wet.
